Chapter Three - The Advanced Guard

Poor Harry, he laments for a few minutes that he has had quite a day: Dementor’s attack Dudley making him do spells when he knows he is not supposed to as it is against the rules. He seems to be always breaking rules even though he doesn’t do it intentionally. His Patronus Charm sure did the trick though. And now he is facing expulsion from his home: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry decides to write to Sirius, his godfather, Hermione and Ron to try to find out what is going on in the wizarding world. Harry insists to Hedwig that she is not to return without “decent-length answers”.

The Dursleys decide to go out this summer evening but not before they locked Harry in his room giving him a stern warning to not touch the television, stereo, food, or any of their possessions. Harry resigns himself to a quiet evening with the lights out starring at the ceiling. The next thing you know there is a “sound” downstairs of the Dursley house. It “sounded” like someone had apparated (when wizards disappear and reappear somewhere else). Knowing that Lord Voldemort was still at large, this caused Harry to be on guard. Or perhaps it is burglars.

Guess who was standing in the dark on the stairway of the Dursley home? None other than Professor Moody, or was it. Because last year he was locked up in a trunk all year with an impostor taking his place. But it is Professor Moody with his special eye and all. The next thing you know Harry heard a woman’s voice call out “Lumos” and several other wizards and a witch appeared. One was familiar, Remus Lupin, or Professor Lupin, his old Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, someone Harry highly respected and regarded. The female voice was introduced to Harry as “Tonks, Nymphadora” but she prefers plain old “Tonks”. Several other wizards introduced themselves to be Kingsley Shacklebolt, Elphias Doge, Dedalus Diggle, Sturgis Podmore and two (2) other witches, Emmeline Vance and Hestia Jones. This was quite a group, all there to protect Harry? The “Advanced Guard” tells Harry they are they to escort him out.

But of course Harry is too young to apparate. The decision is made he will have to be taken out by broom. Knowing that he is a fine flyer, Professor Moody thinks this is the plan. Tonks helps Harry pack his things and get Hedwig’s cage. While Tonks is helping Harry, he notices that her hair had changed colors a few times. She tells him that she is a Metamorphmagus which means she can change her appearance at will and that she was born that way. Tonks also tells Harry that she got great marks in Concealment and Disguise during Auror training. Harry thinks to himself that being an Auror was the only career he had considered after Hogwarts.

So, off they go, but before they do, Professor Moody puts a Disillusion Charm on Harry. Harry said it felt like someone had “smashed an egg on his head, with cold trickles running down his body”. He was not quite invisible he just blended in, like a salamander. The group fly for quite some time. They fly so long Harry gets really, really cold. He had never flown so long, so far, in the cold. The next thing Harry knew he and the group land. Land felt very good to Harry. Professor Moody hands Harry a piece of paper and tells him: “Read quickly and memorize”:

The headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix may be found at number twelve, Grimmauld Place, London.
